Historic Newport Home

Tasked with updating the landscaping at this historic oceanfront home while being mindful of CRMC restraints, KP Design nestled a pool with integral spa into a space by the guest house.  The surrounding bluestone patio features comfortable brick seatwalls, a built-in grill and dining area, and space for enjoying the expansive ocean views.  Nearby, a private putting green offers space to play and relax.  The plantings and numerous containers were designed to withstand the strong winds and harsh salt spray of the site, while providing ample summer color.  Two beautifully planted rain gardens work to collect rainwater and allow it to seep back into the ground without running off. New gates and piers provide privacy and security.  KP Design currently maintains the gardens as well.

History on the Point

Located in the Newport's famed Point neighborhood, this historic home needed a new garden that felt like it had always been there while also serving the homeowner's modern needs.  With that in mind, KP Design designed the property to include a greenhouse, a shed, a small brick dining patio, a larger brick sitting patio with a corner seatwall, a cobble driveway, fencing and gates, and lush, layered plantings that provide privacy and year-round seasonal interest.

Cliff Walk Beauty

For the landscaping surrounding this stunning new construction home on the Cliff Walk, KP Design and Drake Design Studio collaborated to design a swimming pool surrounded by lawn, sweeping bluestone terraces, natural flagstone stepper paths, a cobble-edged peastone driveway and motorcourt, built-in grill, and driveway gates and piers, made from granite salvaged from on site, as well as lush plantings that withstand the intense oceanside conditions while softening and grounding the beautiful brick residence. KP Design currently maintains the gardens as well. More recently, beautiful granite walls were built with stone salvaged from on site, and a privet-wrapped dedicated cutting garden, centered on a lovely custom shed, was added.

Jamestown Pool & Garden

Tasked with designing a new pool with integral spa, KP Design modernized the overgrown garden space within the existing stone walls, contrasting clean bluestone coping and modern lawn surround with lush garden beds and classic masonry. The pool space is at once intimate yet expansive to the large lower lawn and ocean views beyond. KP Design currently maintains the gardens as well.

Bellevue Estate

With over five acres of massive trees and amazing historic grounds, this antebellum mansion underwent a garden renaissance over the course of four years. Working with the existing bones of a formal, axial layout, KP Design created planting designs for and oversaw installation of a perennial and rose border, a shade garden, a children’s garden, a large cutting garden, a grove of magnolia trees, raspberry and blueberry houses, a dedicated vegetable garden with greenhouse, and a moonlight garden with gazebo and summerhouse.

Terrace Garden

The original yard was dwarfed by a large deck and bounded by an unsightly concrete wall.  KP Design was hired to design a new outdoor space, featuring a dining area with pergola, an outdoor shower, a built-in gas fire pit, and tons of low-maintenance privacy plantings.

Bunker Hillside

For a home built on top of a WWII bunker, the steep turf hillsides made for challenging maintenance. KP Design designed and oversaw installation of new hillside plantings to reduce maintenance, improve erosion control, and provide beauty. One side features a full-sun collection of low maintenance shrubs, ornamental grasses and perennials, while the other side showcases low maintenance shade-loving plants.

The homeowners wanted a low-maintenance, turf-free pool yard that evoked the serene, relaxed feeling of a day at the beach.  KP Design designed and installed the new pool yard plantings.

Colonial Cottage

In small Newport homes with small yards, it’s essential to make every bit of space count. KP Design created a simple patio design that became an outdoor room, an extension of the living space, for the historic cottage.
